“My name is Hella Bill and I am a recent graduate from the Nelson Mandela International School in Berlin in which I did the IB Arts Diploma Program. In order to further advance in my technical skills I additionally went to the Jugendkunstschule Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf (JKS), through which I also got the honor to participate in this competition. I am very grateful to have been selected as a winning student for my piece “Sometimes it is all too much” and for having the opportunity to come to Tokyo to have my work exhibited here.

“Sometimes it is all too much” is a triple exposure image full of movement and chaos. I used a monotonous medium, pencil, which allowed me to take away the element of color adding clarity and orientation to the busy image. I chose plastic wrap to wrap around the subjects head, as it offered a technical challenge which I tackled with the use of whiteout. In my last two years of high school I explored the theme of “affective science”, which is the study of emotion. This artwork intends to facilitate an open interpretation by conveying an emotion that could be applied to several situations but aims to convey the general psychological state of panic and overwhelmingness to the highest degree.

I wish to thank my family and friends, and of course, the Nelson Mandela School and the

Jugendkunstschule for providing me with the opportunity to participate in this prestigious competition and by consistently supporting me in my pursuit of the arts.” (May 24, 2016)

Hella Bill is invited to travel to Tokyo, Japan, from June 29 to July 6 2016 to show her artwork in the international art exhibition of student work organized by the International Foundation for Arts and Culture Japan. She will be accompanied through her mentor from the Nelson Mandela International School and Jugendkunstschule, Florentine Baumann.
